How to Protect Your Porch and Deck from Winter Weather in the High Country

Up here in the High Country, cold weather comes quick — and your porch or deck takes the brunt of it. Between moisture, freezing temps, and UV damage, wood surfaces can crack, warp, or peel fast if they’re not protected. The good news? A weekend of simple maintenance now can save you hundreds in repairs later.

1. Inspect for Soft Spots or Loose Boards

Walk the whole deck and porch slowly. Look for soft wood around posts or stair treads — especially near the edges where water collects. Tighten loose screws and replace rusted nails with exterior-grade screws for better hold.

2. Clean Off Dirt and Algae

Dirt traps moisture, and green algae gets slippery once frost hits. Use a deck cleaner or a mix of warm water, vinegar, and a little dish soap. Scrub, rinse, and let it dry completely before sealing.

3. Re-Seal or Stain Before It’s Too Cold

You’ll want at least two warm, dry days in a row for the best results. A fresh coat of semi-transparent stain or clear sealer adds a barrier against water and UV rays. Don’t forget the railings and steps.

4. Protect Underneath

Leaves and debris under your porch trap moisture. Sweep them out to keep airflow moving — this prevents rot from starting where you can’t see it.

5. Cover or Store Furniture

Moisture can wick through chair legs and trap against wood. Store outdoor furniture and rugs or put them on risers so they don’t hold dampness against the deck boards.

A few hours of work this October can add years of life to your porch and deck. If you’d rather have a pro take a look, Mountain Community Handyman Services offers cleaning, sealing, and minor repair services throughout Avery and Watauga Counties.
